This music for Tip of My Tongue was originally created for David Herrera Performance Company, for their 2022 production at Z Space in San Francisco. Tip of My Tongue explores how non-English or mixed-English minority communities in the United States use language and communication practices as tools for cultural visibility, perseverance, and connection to other cultures. The work also challenges the "This is America, Speak English!" mindset held by a dominant English-speaking culture set on assimilation and erasure of non-English languages.
The music is comprised almost entirely of the human voice – created in collaboration with soprano Amy Foote. From operatic solfège to electronic beatboxing – the voice is sometimes unadorned and at other times deconstructed – exploring the power, beauty, and complexity of the human voice and language. The music is guided and punctuated by voiceovers from the dancers themselves, who candidly share poignant and personal experiences of mixed-English/ multi-lingual lived experiences and perspectives.
Special thanks to the dancers whose voices shaped this work:
Katie Florez, Nicole Maimon, Olivia Caldeira Holston, Erik Debono, Sawako Gannon, Brandon Graham
